Sophie, was brutally attacked along with her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, while walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Rossendale in Lancashire. As a result of her severe head injuries she went into a coma, never regained consciousness, and later died. The police said the attack may have been provoked by the couple wearing gothic fashion and being members of the goth subculture.

Black Rose 4 Years on....
I was not able to listen to Black Roses at the time it was scheduled, but have just listened on the I-Player. It was so powerful to have Sophie's story retold in this way. I have been aware of Sophie and Rob since it happened, but Black Roses was a very humbling portrayal of such a beautiful girl who was subjected to such a wicked act. My heart goes out to all of the families of these two gentle creatures. x

Hi auntie sophie im your nephew stephen mcardle, i couldnt believe it when i heard about you and im sorry that its taken me so long to write on your wall but ive never really knew what to say to you as i didnt really know you that well. I cant believe your gone and i never got to know you, i know you would of been a great aunite to me and i would of been a great nephew to you. My girlfriend has recently had a baby girl and we have named her Destiny Sophie Mary Ann McArdle. She would of loved to meet you because i tell her about you all the time so she knows about you.
